I, Maria Antonia da Silva of Victoria in the

Colony of Hong Kong, do solemnly and sincerely declare

1. That I am a single woman. I have been living

with Thomas Hore, Inspector of Nuisances for the last 5 years

2. One day more than a year ago I was in my bedroom

in Mr. Thomas Hore's house; the interpreter Cheang Yuet

Po and Mr. Thomas Hore were in the sitting room talking, I

heard Mr. Hore say "I can't receive it, because I am in the

Government service", I then came out into the sitting room

and asked the interpreter in Chinese what he was talking

about with Mr. Hore (Mr. Hore was present but he does not

understand any Chinese). The interpreter told me that the

master of a gambling house wanted to ask Mr. Hore whether

he would receive any money. I said no he must not receive

anything.

3. The interpreter came again a few days afterwards

to Mr. Hore and again repeated the offer and I heard

him refuse again,

4. Two or three weeks afterwards the interpreter

came to me alone and asked me if I would receive any

money for my own use. He offered $1.50 per day. I consented

and I told him not to let Inspector Hore know about it,

otherwise I should get into trouble with him. From that time

I received $1.50 per day, of which I paid the Interpreter
